Iphone 13

The 2021 edition of Apple's flagship product, the iPhone, has been revealed, with the iPhone 13 going on sale in Australia next week.

The iPhone 13 is the fifteenth iteration of the successful smartphone since its initial release in 2007, and it looks identical to the 2020 release, the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 13 will be available in four variants: iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro max.

On the screen, the "notch" at the top of the screen, which houses the front cameras and sensors, has been lowered in size by 20%, which, although certainly an improvement for Apple, still places it behind competitors that use smaller dot cut-outs or even under-screen cameras.

Underneath that now-familiar squared appearance comes a powerhouse of performance and capabilities, maybe beyond the demands of most ordinary users.

The performance of iPhone 13

Apple's iPhone 13 will include an all-new processor — the A15 Bionic — that will serve as the device's brains and heart, allowing it to support some of the most advanced features such as augmented reality, graphic-intensive gaming, high-performance work and enterprise apps, and, of course, your calls and messages.

The iPhone 13 performance was described as being 50% quicker than their "competition" during Apple's virtual launch event this morning, however there was no clear indication of how much faster it is than Apple's prior generation phones.

Camera on iphone 13

Understanding the ongoing importance of cameras on current smartphones, Apple's iPhone 13 includes bigger pixels in the camera's sensor, allowing for greater light capture in low-light settings.

The entry-level iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini have camera technologies such as sensor shift for stabilisation, which was first introduced on the high-end iPhone 12 Pro Max last year.

Aimed for movie fans and aspiring filmmakers, the iPhone 13 Pro includes a cinematic mode that enables for cinema-style focus methods when recording video. When creating videos that are meant to seem like cinematic films, this mode follows faces and adjusts emphasis from topic to subject. These effects can be applied later, along with depth and colour.

The camera system on the iPhone Pro has seen significant improvements in low-light performance, as well as an impressive 6x optical zoom range from ultra wide to 3x telephoto.

Apple's iPhone 13 Pro range will perform well up close with a new macro photography mode that does not require an additional lens when using the ultra wide lens.

In addition, Apple has introduced iPhone "Styles" in photography, which allow you to set up styles of photography you like — think of them as presets that will take full advantage of the camera system without having to tweak the settings in detail every time you want to pull off a certain style of shot.

Screen and battery

Things are brighter and better on the display, of course. It's 28% brighter, including peak brightness, and uses less power on the iPhone 13 and Mini.

The new Super Retina XDR for iPhone 13 Pro models has a 15% higher peak brightness, as well as Apple's ProMotion technology, which debuted first on the iPad Pro. This enables up to 120Hz refresh rates — essentially smoother-looking scrolling and transitions, which other companies, such as Samsung, have been doing on their phones for well over a year.

With an improved processor, brighter screen, and better cameras, battery life is always a concern. According to Apple, the iPhone 13 will have a longer battery life.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini have storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 512GB. Storage on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max starts at 128GB and goes up to 1TB.

In order to continue their environmental commitment, Apple has removed the plastic covering around the iPhone 13 box, which it claims saves 600 metric tonnes of plastic wrapping.

The standard iPhone 13 and 13 Mini are available in five colours, while the iPhone 13 Pro is available in four: graphite, gold, silver, and "Sierra Blue," a lighter blue than the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 13 will be available for pre-order on Friday, September 17, and will be available for purchase through telcos and retail locations the following week, on September 24.
