After Spain's Carlos Alcaraz upset world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a fifth-set tiebreak at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated reigning champion Naomi Osaka, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 16 of a major for the first time.
Osaka was up a set and a break when she was denied a match-winning serve at 6-5 in the second set.
“I think I wanted to remain on court a little bit longer,” Fernandez, who overcame her opponent's 15 aces, laughed. "I also wanted to put up a show for everyone here." An hour on the court was simply insufficient for me.”
